okay, got 10 u.s gal.tank, one zebra danio, a red-tailed shark, and 2 phantoms, the phantoms are male and female, female seems a bit large-bellied,put male and female into breeder tank, since male is almost completely black, and they are most times side-by side, and right now are brushing their tails together in a slapping type of motion, could they be breeding?, or is female laying eggs?..need to know so I can keep an eye on the eggs and possible fry

What you are seeing is probably early breeding signals. The main thing to watch for is the pair dashing in and out of plants. They will lay their eggs as they do this. They are also voracious egg eaters and will hunt out and eat any egg they can find. You need tons of fine leafed plants in the tank and a substrate that will help hide the eggs, like a layer or two of marbles. Remove both of them after the female is thinner looking. Here's a great article with more details on breeding them and raising the fry.

breeding is the easy part with these guys, the rearing of the fry is the hard part. First the female will lay 200-300 eggs which every other fish in the tank will be eating. The fry hatch in around 2 days. Then the fry are slow growing and will need live foods like brine shrimp until the are big enough for finely crushed flake food. IF you really want to breed these fish you will need to set up a seperate tank to house the blk phan and after the breed remove them from the tank. Lots of live plants for the babies. If it were me i would use the 10 gallon as the breeder tank and purchase a much larger tank for the guys you already have like a 20 or29 gallon. This will give you room to build up the danios so they have a school to swim in and give a little breathing room for the red tail cuz he will get 5 inches. You will have room also for a algae eater if neccesary, and room to house the parent fish, and a few other tetras if you so desire.
