How much is my 1948 quarter worth? It's in good condition. It is silver and there is no mint mark.

My friends say that it is only worth $.25. I say that it has to be worth at least $.26.

Who's right?

Both of you are wrong. 1948 quarters are made of silver(90% silver composition) so even in very worn condition, it's worth at least 7x the face value.

Retail values for 1948 Philadelphia mint quarter(no mint mark) in average circulated is $2.50, almost uncirculated is $3 and uncirculated from $5.

The 1948 quarter has a mintage of 35,196,000 and the high figure has been keeping the values low.

As Silverpe already said, you are both wrong. Due to it's silver content it is worth 7-8 times face value. Did you check for a mint mark, it is on the eagle side, below the wreath. The 1948-D & S are worth more as a collectors item in high curculated grades. Non of this date are listed in dealers price guides, so can't get you what a dealer would pay. Looks like they sell for from $2.00- $4.00 in high circulated grades. Hope this helps but since you said .26 you win.

If it is a genuine U.S. Quarter the silver may be worth more than $.25 I'm sure you can find out at a coin shop - maybe even over the internet.

For the silver content....about 17 or 18 times the face value so about $4,25 cdn. After 1967, Canadian coins silver content went down by a large percentage, so pre 1967 coins are sought for their metal value by buyers. That is the current price offered in Toronto by silver buyers, by the way. Jim B. Toronto.

It's only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I've learned that so far with collecting coins myself.
