check to see if the distributor gear is stripped. check to see if the coil is getting power. check your grounds..i have ran into this before and it could be something so simple it was just overlooked. i am working on 84 GMC S15 right now.

This is assuming the engine is a 4.3L - V6

Check that you have power going to the distributor cap.

Remove the Plug that says Bat. With a test light, check for power.

If there is power to the distributor, & you say you replaced the coil in the cap. Check that electrode from the coil to the rotor is there. All checks OK remove the wire to the module in the base of the distributor. I've seen the wires corrode & in some cases break.
If wires appear OK, then replace the module & recheck.

If the engine has lots of miles on it, while the cap is off, place a socket on the crankshaft & rock the engine back & forth. This is to check the amount of slack in the cam chain & if the rotor is turning. If the rotor is not turning, then replace your cam chain.

Good Luck

a 4.3 is in basic terms a 350 with 2 of its balls chopped off! the only good 4.3 they geared up became with a rapid. i might the two leave the inventory in-line 4 for financial equipment, or squeeze interior the nastiest small block i ought to(383 or greater). it may be cool to put in an emissions criminal camaro or vette 350 and save it highway criminal. Even greater advantageous may be an ls2.

Make sure your auto shutdown relay is not stuck, or not getting correct power and ground, if it is malfunctioning, it will cut your ignition power if I remember right.... been a few years since I worked on regular auto.
