Your view sounds Existential.Existentialism is a wide branch of philosophy that defies nihilism and says there's no metaphysical meaning or at least it is and will remain unknown to us.The only meaning is the one we create for ourselves. If you're interested,I can suggest a few Existential philosophers:Friedrich Nietzsche,Soren Kierkegaard,Robert C. Solomon,Jean Paul Sartre,Albert Camus, just to name a few of the popular ones.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

OK, no god.
Everything you say is right. So whats your point.
Your just stating the obvious conclusion to your way of thinking.
With your line of thinking, then not only is there no meaning to life, but there is no objective truth and no morality as our forefathers such as Benjamin Franklin etc. clearly tried to hold to, convey. Heck, we should not even be here because they left Europe for religious freedom.
So there is no basis for anything. There is no reason to do anything or not do anything. Ethics is out the window.
So you should take a weekend and decide what would bring you the most pleasure and at least make sure you do that. Because once you are gone and your family is gone, thats it for you. Who cares. Don't worry about the people you hurt along the way because that little voice inside saying its wrong is imaginary because there is no right or wrong.
Stop chasing significance because its meaningless. You have no significance.
Oh and quit pretending that eternity has been set in your heart which brings you to ask these type of questions.
Here, Ill say there, there now it will be OK. Hows that.

I believe that everybody on this earth has a purpose in life, whether it is leading a nation to prosperity or something as simple as recycling litter on the ground. Everything in life leads to something else and eventually every person inhabiting this earth will commit an act(s) that will impact something in the future. In the end there will be something big, an ending to the history of life that will be affected by the cumulative actions of our human race. Although it may sound depressing (maybe not as depressing as a meaningless life) you may have served your purpose in life by bringing this topic up and enlightening others on the matter. Even the simple beggar in a third-world country who may not seem to affect anything serves a purpose. Perhaps the purpose of the poor soul was to give me something to write about in this paragraph. Yet we may never know. Until the end of life we will not know its purpose, and when this ending comes, it may be too late.

You are absolutely correct. The problem is that the “what’s the meaning…?” question is flawed.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Purpose, but no meaning.
The attributes of Life are typical of those of every other element of nature. Naturally occurring phenomena, such as rain, a tree, a life all serve a purpose but meaning is not one of their attributes.
As for god, pointless, perhaps, by the standard religious definition of God, but not so when used in the context of my definition, (concept), of god.
I like the way you think, but try to avoid final conclusions, instead consider all beliefs to be in process, continually being refined.

The purpose of life is to stay alive and perpetuate ourselves (by reproducing).
Intellectually, this seems rather pointless and silly. We would hope for more than that. So we tend to convince ourselves that there "must" be more to life than that. If we don't think too deeply about it, usually we do come up with things to live for--things that make it seem more like life is indeed worth living. This isn't very difficult to do, as long as one doesn't think too critically about it.
My current purposes in life/reasons for living are to enjoy my interactions with my wife, children, and grand-kids. And to find out what happens in the next episode of "24." And to see how many points I can rack up with "Yahoo! Answers."

I agree with you about life not having a purpose. I am currently 18, so that may change in a while. As of now, everything is robotic, meaningless, and simply a burden. I hope it changes sometime soon...

I definately agree .What is the point to anything. We just plod along and time just goes on.What you did even a minute ago is gone. You look forward to something then all of a sudden thats over. What you did ,say 20 years ago, is just a memory but it does feel like it was yesterday.Sorry I hope I'm not depressing you.

Actually, I've been thinking about this quite alot lately. It's the circle of life:
-born
-grow up
-go to school
-get a job
-have a family
-anything else
-die.
If you think about it, there's really no point to even get up and out of bed in the morning. One of my more religous friends responded with her theory about god, and I don't believe her. 1 of my more humerous friends said "So that's the circle of life, hunh? Well. I get what you're saying, because circles have no points!" haha. I really like what you said though.
I kind of don't see why it's so important to get up in the morning, go to school, go to work, etc. We're all just going to die anyway, right???

Life just is. It has no intrinsic, or built in meaning of it's own.
All the meaning that life will ever have is the meaning that you give to it.
Looks like its up to you.
Love and blessings Don
