Possibly. The instinctive impulses seek discharge. The ego blocks discharge if it deems the impulses inappropriate. How can the impulses be discharged in an appropriate manner? They can be redirected, of course.

Depends on what you mean by "strong instincts". The strongest instincts are those for food, shelter and other survival necessities. The next strongest is the instinct to procreate--yet we suppress that urge all the time.
Some psychologists argue that the supression of violent instincts provoke a lash out, producing the violence that explodes into our culture (school shootings ,ect) but this has been discounted by mainstream psychologists because there is no evidence for it.

I think it is smart to follow your instincts as they were given to you for a purpose.

If you disregard your instincts, and many people have a tendency to ignore them, then you are not living to your full potential which could cause disarray.

Emotions seem to get in the way of instinct as we tend to rationalize and fool the "self".
