Well there are a few different ways to bunt. Most common is to try to catch the ball with the sweet spot of the bat, cushion the blow. This will help to not pop the ball up or go straight back to the pitcher. You obviously don't want your finger where the ball is going to hit. This is different for different players many hold the bat with one hand against the knob with the other just below the sweet spot.

I did the same thing when i first started bunting! Try to thold the bat, exceot make sure your fingers are holding on tight, but NOT in front of the bat...if they are in front, that maybbe why ur getting hit soo easily..GOOD LUCK

well....when i first learned it was complicated...the only thing you need to do is make sure your hand isn't too far up on the bat......and that your fingers are more behind the bat...and you can try to tilt the bat a little more torwards 3rd base.....that sometimes helps keep it away from your hand.....it takes some practice but you'll get it. ;D
(my explaination sucks cuz i'm bad at explaining things online but hey i tried)

You do want to get your fingers out of the way, but you just learned that.... Lay your right thumb on top of the bat, your palm behind it and your fingers under it, curled up a bit.

I am pretty sure that you are not allowed to bunt in softball- at least you aren't in slowpitch.
