I live in an apartment across the street from a middle school. Every day the dogs stare out the windows and bark at everyone walking around. They even bark when they hear a rustling outside and neighbors walking in to their apt.

I have tried everything. Rewards for being good, slapping their butt w/my hand and newspapers, and even a stern "NO" doesn't work.

Am I literally a bad dog parent? I keep them in good health and exercise, but I can't train them to stop doing the one thing that annoys me.

When they bark grab their snout and hold it shut calmly and sternly say be quiet. Never yell at them because that's similar to a bark, and they won't get the point. They will just think it's ok. You have to be consistant though. You can't let them go even once without you correcting them for barking.

Train yourself not to talk and you might be on to something.
They are trying to alert you to potential threats to keep their pack safe. Its what they do.
But, you may try teaching the command "enough".
When they bark, get up acknowledge what they see. Tell them they are good dogs. Then them away from the distraction. If they bark more tell them enough. Repeat as needed.

Sounds like you tried conventional correcting(though hitting your dog never works btw). You might have to resort to a training(shock) collar for your dog. It's not a nice thing at all to use, but a smart dog usually only has to be zapped once to get the idea.

I too have a dog who barks...alot. Drives me crazy. If you get an answer please let me know. And I have one of those shock collars. All we have to do is tap it on the table and he shuts up but not for long. He must know I am talking about him hes barking now.

either take them to a trainer, or buy a shock collar, it may sound mean but it will train them to bark when YOU want them to- when someone knocks on the door only
