People are ignorant as to what happened and want to take the blame out on someone.
That is what sucks about working retail, you are the front man for any abuse.

That's people for you. *sighs* Most aren't like that, but enough are to make it a real pain.
These people are angry, frustrated, possibly scared, and they feel the need to vent, and to yell at someone. Since they can't get to the CEO of Menufoods, they take it out on the person they have easy access to - the retail worker.
Of course, they could also send a letter to Menufoods, but a) that'd be more work, b) it's not as satisfying as yelling at someone, and c) they know it wouldn't make a difference to the situation. Obviously, yelling at your poor brother doesn't make a difference either, but people can at least tell themselves "Hah, I showed him!" if they see he looks bothered/taken aback by their behavior.
I've been in a similar situation - I sued to work at a library (not exactly retail, but same principle) and every time a copier was broken, or we didn't have a book someone wanted, or we had it but it was checked out, they'd yell at ME. (Well, not every time of course, but it sure felt like it.)
There's nothing your brother can do about it, so tell your brother to just smile, say "I understand how frustrated you are, this is really bad", nod, and let the yelling roll of. He shouldn't take it to heart, these people aren't really yelling at HIM as a person, they're just letting out their anger. Or maybe he could talk to his manager and ask if they have any tips on how to handle such customers.
Tell your brother to hang in there. Not everyone blames him - in fact, hardly anyone does, it's just that the morons stand out more. This will blow over. Good luck to him!

Because some people are very ignorant. Tell your brother to tell them " I am very sorry if you have experienced any difficulties with some of the products sold here, however i am not directly associated with it in any way so please contact such-and-such by calling _ _ _- _ _ -_ _ _ for any questions/concerns of complaints you may have" If they say anything else to him just tell him to walk away, he has addressed the problem, told them how to solve it and should not get fired/lectured for bad customer service at all. As long as he keeps his cool everything will be good!

They are just upset. But to take it out on someone with no connection to what happened, I have no idea.
Some people can lose their cool though. If they really love their animals they'll do everything they can to place blame on someone.
