Most answers you are going to get on this question is going to be about the Slavery issue that was at the top of the listings of reasonings behind the Civil War
BUT--- the slavery issue was simply the Straw that broke the camel's back in the Main Reason behind the break down of the Union at that time---- that reason was an issue known as States' Rights !!
There had been a long running battle within the Union of just how much power the Federal Government would be allowed in comparitives to the power of each State within that Union---and the main contengent of States' Righters were within the South--- they contended that the State NOT the Federal Government should have the greatest leverage of the law within each state and that the Federal Government should be about the business of consolidating the States overall welfare through a forum OF states as opposed to a centralized authority Governing these states as principle law maker !!
The issue had many many individual points of battle at that time period--- with the Federal Government consistantly pushing the states for more and more say in their internal affairs MUCH to the dislike OF the states righters !!!
When the Federal Government -- through the Emancipation Proclaimation -- decided to "free all slaves" arbitrarily--- the Southern states righters saw this as a point of war for THEY had almost their entire economy built around the "asset" of slave labor as the primary "production tool" OF their economy !!! And, they saw this move as an attempt by the Federal Government to beat them completely down economically where they would HAVE TO CAPITULATE ON EVERY OTHER POINT---so it was the last nerve for the South and one after another they began to secede from the Union !!

If the South was really fighting for states' rights, why did the South support the fugitive slave laws which gave enormous powers to the federal government to round up fugitive slaves. And contrary to the rant above, the emancipation proclamation was not made until the middle of the Civil War. The South seceded right after Lincoln was elected, because Lincoln did not support extending slavery into the territories. The South started the war by firing on a federal fort to attempt to confiscate federal property. Don't let anyone kid you. The Southern states seceded over slavery.

the NORTH and the south faught for a couple of reasons. The Confederates (south) faught because they wanted to be their own nation. The Union (north) faught because they wanted to keep the nation together. Kind of a funny concept, fighting to keep peace. Anyway, the main issue was slavery. The northern states were against slavery, the south were for it. When Lincoln came to presidency he wanted to keep neutral on the issue, but when.. I think it was michigan.. was added as a free state then all hell broke loose. They wanted to keep the balance of free and slave states even, but eventually more were free.

It was over slavery. North wanted the South to free the slaves, but the South wanted to keep them.
