We have a very long driveway made from asphalt. I am interested in placing pea gravel over the asphalt surface. Some of the surface is flat with a mild grade. Some of the asphalt driveway is a fairly steep section. I want to put pea gravel over a portion of the steep drive and then end this leaving the asphalt intact for the balance of the driveway. I do not want the pea gravel to fall off and roll down the driveway. I do not want the pea gravel to be kicked off by car tires. What would be the best way to do this project and the best products for placing on the asphalt to embed the pea gravel, and what sort of pea gravel would work best.

My best advice is to call your local paving company and ask. Also you could go to your local roofing supply store and buy tar. You want the type that will dry to a hard rubbery texture. As tar dries in different hardness. Some dry to like a glass type hardness, others stay wet and tacky. Others dry to a caulk like hardness. You can but it 5 gallon buckets. You would want to apply an ample amount as maybe 1/4 to 3/8 inch. Pouring it down and rolling it out with a roller might be the easiest apllication but consult the can. Maybe a thicker application on steeper inclines because of tires of cars. Spread the gravel over the tar covering completey showing no black color. Tamp with tamper to ensure embediment. You can buy a hand tamper at your local hardware store or rent one at Home Depot Tool Rental for cheap. Let dry. Broom excess gravel off if you'd like or leave it if you'd prefer. Leaf blower may be the easiest way. Tip#1: Try test areas maybe three to four inche squares with tar and gravel for desired tar thichness. Tip#2: You don't have to do the whole driveway in a day, do sections at a time as it may be eaisier to handle. Sounds easy enough but may involve some work.

That's a new one on me. I can't ever remember anyone doing this. It is commonly done with concrete but I've never heard it with asphalt. Good luck.
