It is an exclusive club with some secret rituals and camaraderie over a meal. It is neither a religion nor a substitute for it. It is of English origin.
In France, a number of Masonic sects dabbled with magic and occultism.
Benjamin Franklin was a Mason and George Washington too.

Freemasons are part of a greater pyramid organization. Red Cross, Shriner's and many many other are in this pyramid. Illuminati are the capstone.
Look on YouTube and Google Video for stuff on them all. Skull n Bones is also part of that pyramid, the organization that Bush and Kerry are part of. And Bohemian Grove. More or less, it all makes up the NWO, New World Order.
