Somewhat thick grass where sun comes thru. everything green between grass and moss, no mud. Huge flower box by trunk. Roots that stick up out of ground make it hard to mow. Thinking about dumping top soil, leveling and reseeding. Would it be worth the trouble if i just sprinkled some seed now?

Grass is the worst thing you can have under trees. Most trees are killed by people hitting the trunks with lawn mowers and weed whackers. Grass also deprives the tree of water and nutrients. Your best bet is to dump a load of compost over the roots and then put in decorative wood chips or decorative mulch over the soil. It looks great, helps the tree and you dont have to cut the grass or or dig out the mold.

Maples have a habit of growing roots into any soil near the trunk. You'd be best off sowing a fescue grass directly in the ground rather than bring soil in, since the Maple roots will inevitably invade that soil.
