It could just be his experiences have been very negative when it comes to gays. I have very negative reactions to the name "Jennifer" because I've only met really witchy women named that. I know, logically, not every "Jennifer" is a witch, but I still have a negative feeling about the name. Perhaps, he's not aware enough to make that connection and realize it isn't valid.
