something most people don't realise is that pirates were often in the pay of specific governments, to mess up the shipping of ships associated with other countries. So, if you were an English seaman, you could get paid nicely for looting a Dutch ship.

These were called "privateers" - you might find some info by looking things up under that term instead of pirate.

As many people have said, Blackbeard is among the most famous. There're a couple of fairly new books on him, too:

Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate by Angus Konstam
Blackbeard: The Real Pirate of the Caribbean by Dan Perry

Arguably the most successful was Black Bart Roberts who started by being shanghaied into the pirate and became an enthusiastic convert:
Black Bart Roberts: The Greatest Pirate of Them All by Terry Breverton

But if you'd like to do someone a bit different, there's always Anne Bonny, Mary Read (women who dressed as men and were pirates) and Anne's husband, Calico Jack:
The Only Life That Mattered: The Short and Merry Lives of Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and Calico Jack by James L. Nelson

Yo-ho-ho!

Teach also spelled THATCH, byname BLACKBEARD, one of history's most famous pirates, who became an imposing figure in American folklore and is still well-known by his nickname Blackbeard.
Thought to have been active as a privateer for the British during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13), Teach was first heard of as a pirate late in 1716. The following year he converted a captured French merchantman into a 40-gun warship, "Queen Anne's Revenge," and soon became notorious for outrages along the Virginia and Carolina coasts and in the Caribbean Sea.

In 1718 he established his base in a North Carolina inlet, forcibly collected tolls from shipping in Pamlico Sound, and made a prize-sharing agreement with Charles Eden, governor of the North Carolina colony. At the request of Carolina planters, the lieutenant governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood, dispatched a British naval force under Lieut. Robert Maynard, who, after a hard fight, succeeded in killing Teach. The pirate's body was decapitated, and his head was affixed to the end of the bowsprit of his ship.

Apart from the luxuriant black beard which earned him his nickname, the most prominent aspect of the Teach legend is his great buried treasure, which has never been found and probably never existed.

Edward Teach...aka Blackbeard
Edward "Blackbeard" Teach was undoubtedly was one the most feared and most despised pirates of all time. Edward Teach is thought to have lived in England before his pirate career, although his exact origins are unknown. He was named "Blackbeard", for his large black beard that almost covered his entire face. To strike terror in the hearts of his enemies Blackbeard would weave hemp into his hair, and light it during battle. Edward Teach was an unusually large man, carrying two swords, numerous knives, and pistols- he was feared by his own crew.
