The screw heads should still be below the surface. If yours are sticking up, then you got some more turning to do....to sink them a bit. Then use drywall mud (or spackle and a 4" knife(putty knife will do -just more piddly to work with) and give a swipe over the screw leaving more than just the bare minimum - you want to leave some to sand off. The bigger the area the less noticeable. When all is mudded. Let dry overnight....then block sand with 150 grit...till smooth with the hand. No need to sand it all off, you are just trying to get a smooth finish. - if your hand can't see it, chances are you eyes won't either.

Get a putty knife and some spackling. Smear some spackling over the holes and let dry. Then you can sand the raised places smooth and paint over it. I like to take a damp cloth and rub it over the spackling instead of sanding, it makes less mess and is easier too. After you smooth with the cloth, let it dry again before painting.

You can use a product called Sheetrock 90, 45, or 20 The numbers represent the drying times.
Follow the mixing instructions, allow to dry and then sand down with a sponge 150 (fine) grit sanding block.
It is important to prime with a quality primer/sealer the repaired areas or better yet prime/seal the entire walls or ceiling before appling the finish coats.

Both of the first 2 answers are way to complicated for nail holes. Get a good patching compound and apply with a putty knife. If done properly, there will be no 'raised' area to sand. Larger holes may require the methods suggested, by not nail holes.
