I have a 1999 toyota tacoma and whenever it is idling the is a rattle coming from it. Upon further inspection, the pitch and frequency of the rattle changes when put into D, R, N, and Park. I thought maybe a belt too tight at first and a pulley was making the rattle but I dunno......any help?

it could be a heat shield around the exhaust pipe or a catalytic converter. with the vehicle cool and not running tap on the exhaust lightly with a hammer in different places and see if you can here the same noise. this is only a guess from the imfo you gave. but Ive heard of this before

It is usually the airbag module behind the glove compartment that has come loose. The dealer should be able to re-mount it.

If it is NOT that, then have your transmission and your axles looked at.

if it seem,s to be coming from that area....check water pump , alternator , drive pulley,s , belt tensioner, power steering pump , air conditioner compressor & clutch assembly , belt tension & condition..........................otherwise will need more detail to diagnose properly.
