I'm 29 and like Amanda, if it doesn't fit into my pocket (cash, debit card, change, and maybe a pen and sanitizer, which I also keep in my car), I don't need it. I don't get the whole purse (or shoe, for that matter) obsession. I saw on the "Saturday Early Show" that a woman buys on average, 20 handbags a year. I haven't bought 20 in my life. I do have a couple of small bags which I use when I go out for the day for a book and a couple of magazines and possibly a granola bar. However, just for running errands, it goes into my purse.
Different strokes for different folks.

Well, Rodney, it is like this: Women are gatherers by nature and as such need something into which to place their gatherings. In the past a fruit basket of some sort would have sufficed, but in today's society where most women live in an urban environment a purse is the carrier of choice. Besides, there are certain items that a woman always needs to have such as hygienic items, make-up, and keys.
I hope that this has been most revealing and useful.
Cheers,
Mr. M on "handbag."

Not all women think a handbag is a necessity. I carry one when I think I may need something for an outing and it won't fit in my pocket. Remember this when you ask a woman for a pen or a tissue and she reaches into her handbag to get it for you. And Ladies, how many times has a guy asked you to "hold my keys", or "put this in your purse for me"? Appreciate those handbags. They come in handy.

Get it right and dont generalize women! I am a woman and do not need or think that a handbag is a necessity for me! Either you are married with a wife with a lot of bags or you are seeing/did see a woman with alot! How about remembering that we are all different with minds and tastes all of our own.

Who is 'women'? I'm sure millions of women don't own a handbag. And why is it stupid to carry many small belongings in one big bag? Would it be more intelligent to ferry them about individually in a collection of tiny bags? Or perhaps to juggle them around between feet and hands? And why have you asked such a pointless question? And why can't you spell? And why have you left out an indefinite article? Do you think proof-reading beneath you, Mr Man? I suppose if you were born with a willy, you don't need to write good English, right?

Well Rodney, I think you are making generalisations about women. If I am wearing a coat with inside pockets in which I can put my purse, phone & keys, I will often go out without a handbag. I often just use a bumbag. ( I am heterosexual in case you are wondering).

Ohhhh handbags are practically a must. You'll thank the next lady you are with when you need a pen, a paper clip, a tissue, a wet wipe, hand sanitizer.....I could go on.

no it is not. Women are are kind of beauty and a handbag does not complete her beauty. So it is a necessity
