The water supply line has a tap where it is connected to the house water. It has a shut-off valve. Turn it clockwise until closed. Then remove the filter cartridge and put it back together, open the tap.

You do realize that while the filter may have activated charcoal in it to improve the taste, it also filters out bits of crap that might jam or ruin your fridges innards? $40 might not be so costly. Perhaps you could extend the change out cycle instead?

OK when you got your fridge did you keep the plug cap for the filter? you can put the plug cap in instead of the filter, if you don't have it , call the place where you got it it have your model and serial handy and get one ordered,$5-6 bucks, once the plug is in there you can use your water and ice fine unless your having water line troubles?

if you don't use the filter you risk messing up the ice-maker and water dispenser which will cost way more than that filter will and if it is the filter that is keeping it from working now ...the filter has already saved you that expense...it is my recommendation that you replace filter

There should be a plug to put in the filter space. If it is missing, you can order one from your local parts store.
