It still exists today as well as head shrinking. The jungles of Mindanoa harbor various tribe who have a centuries old tradition of eating their enemies as a humiliation to their soul and spirit. There have been various incidents over the years of cannibalism by normal everyday people. The Donner party in the last resorted to eating human flesh to survive being trapped in the Sierras in terrible snow storms and many of them died. Also, somewhere in Latin America on about 1980, a plane crashed on the top of a mountain and they too resorted to eating human flesh to survive.

Some used this as a type of religious/spiritual believe, they ate their dead to keep the soul alive in there body
