That's not normal. A baby doens't shrink. It obtains nutrients and grows...only grows.

Her baby isn't thriving or the doctor miscalculated if the size dropped 2 inches. .

It is possible to lose weight while in the womb if something is causing the placenta to not function properly. The placenta transfers nutrients through the umbilical cord to the baby, and is it's sole source of nutrients and energy.

In terms of length, the baby won't shrink - but it is possible that there was a mistake made on a previoius ultrasound. If the doctor feels the baby is no longer growing, it's likely he will have your friend get steroid shots to help mature the baby's lungs and then either induce your friend or do a c-section.

In all likelihood though, they will do another ultrasound before considering early delivery unless there are other medical factors like pre-eclampsia or premature placental aging.

No.
A baby can stop growing -- that's call IntraUterine Growth Retardation, IUGR. If a fetus was truly getting smaller, that would be a very serious concern. IUGR is real, but I have never heard of a fetus getting smaller.
The thing about ultrasound is, there is always a margin of error. If they were a little off on the big side one time, and a little off on the small side the next time, then it could look like the baby is getting smaller.
The same is true of measuring the fundus with a tape measure. It's easy to be off by a centimeter or so.
I would imagine they will do a follow-up ultrasound in 2 weeks to follow this.

Ultrasounds are not always the most accurate way of telling weight and height. I had an ultrasound every week from 30 weeks on and the doctor told me my baby was going to be over 8 pounds the very day I gave birth. And my baby weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces.

I gained 4 stone, pre-being pregnant grow to be a length 8, placed up being pregnant a length sixteen. I had c-sec so tummy grow to be stunning extremely low. fortuitously all of it went decrease back slowly by utilising itself. I walked on a daily basis without fail being as I wasn't making plans to artwork for the 1st 3 hundred and sixty 5 days besides. i grow to be a length 12 interior 6 months, by utilising the time she grow to be 2yrs i grow to be smaller than pre being pregnant and now i've got long previous to my commonly used length 8 and basically over 9 stone with a flat tummy, yet I do an fantastically strenuous pastime which permits. So i might say objective for a 300 and sixty 5 days to enable your physique get decrease back to commonplace, yet do issues like walking, protecting a healthy diet, eating a lot of water - do no longer proceed to eat crap like whilst your pregnant - being a mum is not any excuse for gorging on cream buns & total packets of biscuits - thats basically disgusting lol in case your concious approximately your weight then you certainly'll do it honestly.

yes it could be a problem with the mother providing the baby with enough food or nutrients. the height can also seem to shrink but that usually isn't the case because the weight was decreasing

She needs to have a doctor monitor the babies progression. This does not sound good.

If mom isn't taking care of herself. There may be something wrong though. She should get an amnio test.
