Stanley Miller and Harold Urey designed and performed an experiment 54 years ago that proved organic molecules can spontaneously form from inorganic precursors in an atmosphere they thought likely to be similar to the one Earth had billions of years ago. The major controversy with their experiment lies in the atmosphere used in the model. Subsequent experiments using a variety of atmosphere models by other workers have supported their conclusion that organic molecules required for abiogenesis could indeed form spontaneously in conditions likely to have been found on the Early Earth.
