Granted I'm not some star... but I am a parent who adopted my daughter from China.
Why didn't I help some kid in America?
First, there's no guarantee that if I wanted to adopt a child that it would happen. Then there's no guarantee that I'd only have to spend a certain amount of money to get a child. There's also no guarantee as to any kind of time limit.
There's a lot of different kinds of adoptions and it can vary from state to state.
I personally felt drawn to China to find my daughter It took two years for that to happen but the timeline was laid out for me. There were no unexpected expenses.
Since that adoption we've started on a return to adopt a second girl from China. To help raise some of the money, I sold rubber ducks. Being in the public -- I got to experience people who feel the way you do.
First, it is sad that children have to go through orphanages or foster families. However, their lot in life is a lot better than most orphans outside the USA.
Second, the USA adoption experience favors younger parents. I held off until late in life to become a father. It was my decision but in the United States, that plays against me.
Third, I didn't particularly like the way I was examined through a microscope by all kinds of people and government agencies. To adopt in the USA would mean an even more obtrusive invasion. Teen parents don't have to go to parenting classes, get fingerprinted, and have their financial and social history dissected. Why should a person wanting to adopt?
Fourth, there are too many complications with an American adoption. A parent or relative can come out of the woodwork years after the adoption and stand a good chance of taking the child away. Not a good thing, I think.
Fifth, I don't know a lot of what I like to call true orphans in the USA. Now, don't go off on me and say there are some. I'm sure there are. However, they have biological family out there. It's in their paperwork. I would much rather personally adopt a child who has no family.
Sixth, I've probably have more connections to adoptions than most people. My younger sister was adopted. My wife was adopted. Turns out my wife's birthmother was even adopted. When we got married, we intentionally decided that when we felt the time was right, we would expand our family by adoption only.
Finally, I feel each person is led to adoption by God for various reasons. Some people do adopt domestically. That's fine. It works for them. God wanted it that way. For other people, international adoption works better. That's fine, too. Most people who ask your question are not people who are adopting. The view is a lot different on this side of the fence.

You know what I would like to see for a change, if these celebs are really so into helping with adoption.
I'd like them pour millions of dollars into an adoption TRUST so that regular people who couldn't afford it could adopt kids and not have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. The parents would go through the same deal but not have to pay the fees.
I think they do it because they feel like "saviors" to the people involved. They get a high off of it. Imagine, its like winning the lottery for these kids.
That's why Angelina Jolie said she really couldn't feel that much towards her biological daughter because she was born into priveledge. They get a high off of just chancing upon some child that might otherwise die.
If they were really serious about it they'd help others adopt.

I know!! I have the same question! I assume its because even though children here in the US are waiting to be adopted they have 100x better treatment and care then children in other countries. Plus if a celebrity did adopt a child from the US, the real parents would try to track down their child and get money off of them, sad, but probably true.
Same thing is on American Idol. There are thosands upon thousands of starving children here in the US, but everyone always goes to fight famine in Africa.

if you're referring to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, i think they are doing a good thing. but yeah, i agree, why can't they adopt children from their own country? who knows? maybe they think just because they have all the money and fame, they can go over seas and adopt children that will end up with AIDS or worse. i feel real sorry for all thos kids.

i do no longer think of it is going to likely be a decision consistent with which baby "desires" you greater. Any baby who's orphaned devoid of every physique to dote and cuddle with is "in prefer". it is not important what usa they're from. My husband and that i fostered a baby in usa. We tried to undertake even though it did no longer artwork out (two times). So we tried across the international (Guatemala) and each little thing went comfortably. Now i'm no longer saying that international adoption is "much less difficult". that's no longer the case. yet in OUR family participants....it curiously is what God had planned. pass the place you and your husband's coronary heart leads you. that is 0.5 way international huge and that is down the line...yet your coronary heart will comprehend.

I would love to know that too, I know that there are tons of needy children across the whole world, but there are just as many starving children here than there is anywhere else, I think it is for attention or maybe it is harder to adopt in the US.

Unfortunately, it takes many years to adopt here. And then when mom sobers up or changes her mind 2 years down the road she can fight for her child back . go figure.

What's more newsworthy, a movie star that adopts an African or Asian baby, or one that adopts a boring American one?
