Clinton, Reagan, Carter all made it on their own.
Bush Sr. rode Reagan's coattails, and Bush Jr. rode his father's coattails.
I think Bush nation is all about marketing.

No, he has done very little without daddy. He is a failure and has always had daddy to bail him out. Now the boy is in over his head and while daddy helped him get in I think it will be difficult to impossible for daddy to get Georgie out of this mess.

Absolutely not.
So much of success in politics is name recognition. This can be by virtue of years of accomplishment, by having noteriety in some other field, or, as in Bush's case, by being related to someone who has noteriety.
No way would have Bush have been a viable candidate if judgment was based merely on his professional record in politics and business. It wasn't extensive or successful enough.
No way would Reagan have succeeded in politics if not for his fame as an actor.
Nobody would be talking about Fred Thompson right now if he wasn't that familiar "Law & Order" guy.
