I travel across the US and go to A LOT of cutting horse auctions and this is what I usually wear:
1) Hat - either black (during winter) or white (during summer) traditional cowboy (no super-trendy taco-style) hat or baseball cap with various horse or western company logo
2) Earings - upscale but nothing dangly. (Usually pearl)
3) Necklace - single strand and matches the earrings. (Usually pearl)
4) Collared long-sleeve shirt - it doesn't matter how hot it is, I always wear long sleeves to an auction. I make sure and get it pressed and HEAVY starched the day before.
5) Jeans - dark blue, starched and pressed. No suprises there.
6) Belt - sometimes plain leather with a show buckle and sometimes a b.b. simon rhinestone belt. Depends on the auction and my mood. :)
7) Boots - that match the belt, as long as you don't wear black boots and a brown belt (or vice versa) you'll be okay.
8) Makeup - just a little bit.
9) A SMILE - remember to have fun at the auction. :)

Well, it depends on what sort of horse auction it is.
If it is a Lexington, Kentucky, high class sort of thing, and you're going to be not in a barn, you couldn't go wrong with a white halter sundress, large tortis shell sunglasses, large straw hat, pearl necclace, and brown mules or sandals. Put your hair up in a messy bun and a light eye and red lip.
If it is more cowboy, go with a pair of really slim blue jeans without any holes, a white button up, a distressed leather belt, some cowboy boots in brown, and a pair of avaitors. Put your hair in a pony tail and have a really light eye in something that picks up a color in your outfit and a shell pink lip.

Whatever you wear just make sure you look like you can afford to buy if that's what your there for.
Oh and good thing I won't be there I have some very expensive colts that were 6mo old when I bought them and I paid 6,000 each (by accident) for them. I love them and am happy with my purchase even though my ex-husband was not .
