Dont get me wrong. I know Nigerians commit fraud, I have received those emails too. But I have watched so many exposes of British companies and their fraudulent activities. Banks adding charges to peoples accounts, dodgy estate agents signing signatures, TV programmes running fake phone-in competitions, phishing and pharming and what have you!

I also know of national newspapers running fake competitions! I worked for an organisation which grossly inflated its membership figures, while at the same time spouted off about company transparency and ethics.

None of these companies are headed by Nigerians! And these are only the ones I KNOW about!!

JMilburn, I know you cant be that naive to think that Nigerians invented fraud lolol

I think that these companies have probably been at it for years, but there is greater scrutiny on them now - people are just not willing to brush it under the carpet anymore!

Naim, this question is about why Nigerians are the only nationality accused of fraud when other nationalities do it too. You cant possibly comment on whether Nigerians have respect for anybody or not, and its not relevant to the question anyway.

Anybody who thinks that Nigerians are the only fraudsters in the world is an ignorant bigot. Nigeria only has 419 scams (the trunkboxes, the dead relatives, the fake lotteries and all that). There's other nationalities that run escrow scams, others that run reshipping scams, others that run money mule scams... not to mention all the "white collar" crime and millions of ways people lie and cheat and rip each other off daily!

Race, sex, and religion don't determine whether you're a scammer. It's your lack of ethics and your greed that determine it.

I am glad you used the term, "notorious". The use of this word indicates they are not the biggest, the blackest, the onliest, or any other adjective. It merely says they are the ones the media has portrayed and provided notoriety for. Let's be for real and call this thing what it really is. I could say as an African American male, that democracy is a fraud. At least that's been my experience and interpretation of it. However, we must admit democracy in America could be defined as notoriously fraudulent if the media projects the belief often enough.
Anyway, they are portrayed that way for the same reason Mexicans are portrayed as the only "illegal aliens". African Americans as the only crack users, or the only group in the USA that commits crime.

No idea. I was a courier in London in the 80's. Did lots of embassy runs getting passports and work visas type things. And i can honestly say the Nigerian embassy was filled with the most ignorant, arrogant, self-righteous and rude individuals i have ever had the dis-pleasure of meeting in any embassy i have ever set foot in in London.
I read once that back in the days of the slave trade the British would pay the coastal africans 1 coin for every slave they captured and retrieved from the interior. The slavetraders thought the jungle a bit too dangerous to venture into i suppose. And they would sell them on for 5 coins.
Maybe they just take after the white men that colonized their country and are just no good at the subtlety and pretence he?

They are possibly being picked out because
a. They are often getting caught out
b. The Nigerians (in my experience) are mostly a bunch of swaggering jerks who think the rest of the world is something to be despised and abused.
The attitudes of individual Nigerians are tainting the attitudes of others against them thus making it very easy to have a go at them.
