My (02) Vauxhall Astra stopped producing hot air from the blowers and I also noticed slight overheating of the engine, followed by the return to an unsually tool temperature. Checked the coolant, and it had all gone (it's been a month since I last checked levels), and did a pressure test to check for leaks. Nothing apparent.

Hot air is back on, and performance seems absolutely fine; only unusual thing is the presence of a very small amount steam in the exhaust emissions.

Is this highly likely to be a problem with the head gasket, or could it be something less serious? I've checked the oil, and that seems nice and clean.

OK the cold air through the blowers is caused by the low coolant level. The cause of that could be a small leak or a sticking thermostat, or slight over heating, or an air block clearing or just sitting in queuing traffic. The unusual amount of steam from the exhaust is caused by the colder weather lately and is probably nothing to worry about unless you are getting noticable amounts of water coming out of the exhaust. If when you did a pressure test there was no noticeable drop in pressure then i would assume head gasket is ok. Check the levels regularly and watch for any emulsification in the header tank or in the oil on the bottom of the dipstick. There might be some on the underside of the filler cap although this can be quite normal. As long as your car isn't over heating or running poorly I would say your head gasket is ok.

Almost every question puts the head gasket into question and in 99% of them are wrong. A pressure test would show if the head gasket has gone, but the pressure test would have to be done on each cylinder. A small amount of condensation is normal from the exhaust. Top up the water bottle and keep an eye on it if it drops over a week or two then you could have a cylinder head gasket problem but as the car is running OK it is more likely that you have
leaking hose pipe or hose clip, pay attention to the water temperature gauge, and check the water level more often.

Best check coolant in your radiator regularly ; not when it runs out. When head gasket blows, it all happens very suddenly with lots of steam. Yours sounds like water level simply has not been checked often enough. If it was a slow head gasket leak , then the oil could be emulsified, which would be another sign.

concise description for a change! fair points already made. 8 or 16 valve eng P or D. water loss has got to be going somewhere. w/pump is favorite suspect. re p/test coolent. peform compression test. leaking h\gasket will pressureise system gradually at first increaseing as time goes on diesel heads must be GROUND not flycut to resurface unless PCCs are removed and reset (or gasket problem return)

I don't think it is you head gasket what is the problem, for it would have shown up on the pressure test .all you can do is check your water and oil daily and see what develops
