Ummm, to see things in the dark?
With infrared stove tops, light can be used to cook.
With infrared bathroom lamps, it will keep your skin warm after a shower.
Sunlight (or lack thereof) can trigger outdoor lighting to kick on.
Photoelectric security systems can use light to detect intruders.
Ultraviolet light can be used to clean the air, and sometimes is used in filter systems for Spa's or pools in lieu of chlorine.
