Psychiatrists are doctors (typically MD's - requiring four years of Medical School beyond college). They diagnose, treat, and/or help patients prevent mental illness, and have the ability to prescribe medicines to that end.

Psychologists can have a four-year degree in psychology, and can also pursue this further to the Ph.D. level, depending on how far they want to delve into the large academic world around the many branches of psychology. Psychologists can be counselors of almost any type (marriage, addiction, etc. etc.); they can be clinical psychologists who asses patients mental health; they can be academics, furthering the current body of knowledge about how the human mind works; they can work in the training field as experts in assessing how people might work in different fields, and might improve upon their skills. There is really a broad range of applications of psychology.

I hope this helps.

A psychiatrist has been to medical school, and can therefore prescribe medication. While psychiatrists do some counseling, they rely more on medical therapy than psychologists, who might try things such as group therapy, individual counseling, biofeedback, etc.

The pay is pretty similar for the two.
