The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot is excellent. The series starts with Suze moving across the country from NYC to California so her mom can live with her new husband. Unfortunately not only is the house that they've moved haunted, but so is her new school. Suze knows this because she has a special ability to see and talk to ghosts and since she was a little girl ghosts have always sought her out to help them fix whatever is holding them in this world.
Tithe by Holly Black is an urban fantasy that is really good as well involving the Seelie and Unseelie courts and a girl who is unwittingly connected to both.
As far as horses (or horse like creatures) go, I would suggest The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle. It is a classic tale of fantasy, adventure, love and sacrifice.

"A Great and Terrible Beauty," by Libba Bray. I just read this last week, and I adore it. It's historical fantasy with romance thrown in on the side. I have yet to track down "Rebel Angels," the sequel, but as of now I'd highly recommend "A Great and Terrible Beauty" to nearly anyone.
Although a bit lacking in the romance department (put it this way: even though there are several weddings, there's only one kiss in the entire 1,100 pages), "The Lord of the Rings" is probably the best book I've ever read, and way, way better than the movies. If you haven't read it, READ IT!
Hope this helps,
--Michaela

Have you read the Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey? It's fantastic and has several spin-offs, like Tamora Pierce with Alanna, Daine and Keladry's different stories. And there's some good romance as well!
Also the Vampireville series by Ellen Schreiber is good.

I agree with Cindy B's answer. When I was in school, I loved Madeline L'Engle books. I know there's at least 4 in the series, but A Wrinkle in Time is the first one. It's about the 3 Wallace kids (and a neighbor boy) that have to go to a fantasy world to find and save their scientist dad. GREAT!!!

Three women provide the nurturing for the storyteller in this classic novel. She lost her mother and yet reaches adulthood with her sanity intact. The other daughter in this story also lost her mother and got no such nurture; here name was Mayella. Scout was the storyteller and Calpurnia, Maudie and Alexandra were the three who helped her mature. You would perhaps recognize this as Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird," not the movie version that drew our attention to the courtroom drama...the book is so much richer. Good soundtrack for a remake could be John Mayer's song "Daughters."
