Is it true that when you have your period, you can't have anything done with your hair? When I was youger and would want to get my hair straightened(with the chemicals), my mom would tell not to go during my period because the product will not work...
(the same thing with waxing).
It is something my grandma told my mom and my mom told me...I just don't see the logic behind it...

I believe this is an old wives tale, taken from the days that a period was dirty. Some people believed you couldn't shower during that time of month, too. They were obviously very wrong! It's the only way that time of month can be considered dirty - if you ignore general hygiene. Perhaps this also came about prior to electric appliances and odour neautralising sanitary napkins/tampons and sitting around in a hairdressers with only rags to take care of it, could become amazingly smelly.

It's a myth. If it doesn't sound logical, it's usually a myth. Being on your period doesn't mean you're an extremely fragile human being (except for maybe the bits 'down there' so I'd avoid waxing until it's over), you're still you, you still function... you're just menstruating. We all do it (women), it's not a big deal.

My mom used to tell me that going to sleep with wet hair would make it fall out. At the time, it scared the crap out of me but now I don't even really take her seriously because I can't decide whether or not she actually believes things like that or if she's lying. She also used to tell me that cramps are caused by passing blood clots. It's just simply untrue.

During your period your hormones are at different levels than at other times during your cycle. Therefore, some women get oilier than usual skin and hair. Maybe that's where the myth started, but I know that some hair colors need your hair to be clean. If it's oily the chemicals won't work as well. So, if you have your period and you want to do stuff with your hair, just make sure you wash it first. Some women tend to break out in pimples bc of the hormone levels or because their skin is more oily at the time. Getting waxed can make some people break out so I suppose it could be more of an issue if you're more likely to break out ANYWAY. But, other than that, it should all be fine. Don't let that stop you from doing normal things!

It's a myth. Menstruation doesn't affect hair coloring or straightening. This notion probably arose out of the fact that during pregnancy, when a woman's body is putting out all those hormones, sometimes a permanent won't "take" but with menstruation the hormones levels are not nearly as high.

I believe your hair will not react to a perm as well when you are mensing, I've never heard of waxing being a problem, nor should it, you basically put wax on and rip the hair out, nothing to do with chemical reactions.

It's not true except that the above person is right...waxing might hurt worse.

The funniest/weirdest myth I've heard was from an ex MIL who told me I couldn't go into the garden when I was having my period because the tomato plants would die.

it's not true, but there is a reason to avoid waxing during your period: your skin is much more sensitive so it will hurt like the burning hell!... but there's no reason for hair chemicals to stop working, now, maybe because of the skin's extra sensitivity you might get dandruff, rashes or hair falling off, but it has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the products...

That is so UNTRUE! You can do anything with your period. Even swim (as long as you use a tampon).
