My washer got off balance and it took me a minute to get to it because I was taking care of my toddler. By the time I got there, the barrel was hitting the sides of the washer (it was pretty bad). Now, my washer won't spin. Is there something I can do to remedy the problem before making a call to the repair man?

I can hear the motor trying to spin, but nothing is happening- it makes a slight whirring sound.

The washer is a mid/late 90's GE brand. I don't know exactly which model it is. I'm just hoping it's easy to fix.

Sounds like your belt probably broke. (I've never seen one just slide off.) Without a make/model its hard to say about DIY.

Some are a cinch, and others are very difficult. Nobody handy in the family to at least have a look and confirm? Usually you need only remove the bottom rear cover to see the belt and transmission section.

It sounds like the hydraulic suspension has been damaged, or perhaps the drum has buckled against the concrete blocks inside. There is little you can do yourself to fix it, better call the repairman. Good luck

It sounds like the belt has broken, that's why it is still spinning.
