G'day,
I am an immigrant and have been living in Melbourne for over 16 years and never regret the move at all. I do not have Anglo-Saxon appearance, I speak English with an accent and I still feel like I am born in this country all along. My neighbors are combinations of immigrants and true blue Aussies and we are getting along very well. Racism will always be there in any countries, but I definitely do not feel it here.
Unfortunately you did not mention which city that you are coming to. However this is what I can say about Melbourne:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day like last month, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.
I certainly hope this helps. Yes, there will be some time needed for adjustments, but there will be helps and supports along the way since Australia is built by immigrants (yes, this include the Anglo-Saxons, even the aborigines earliest).
Welcome to Australia and enjoy.

The job market is quite small in Australia - my advice is to do your research before you get there. You might not earn as much as you did back home and the cost of living has gone up a fair bit in recent years. They can also be a bit picky about your work experience if you don't have any local experience you might have trouble finding work - so you might have to work a bit harder to find what you want. Saying this Australian's in general are pretty friendly and willing to give anyone a 'fair go'. Sydney is the most expensive city, but has the most jobs. Melbourne is cool and full of great people and bars. It's a beautiful country. Good luck!

I have not been to Australia although I did emigrate to another country from the UK. The main thing to know is that you will need at least twice as much money as you first thought to tide you over until you get work and to set up a new home. It is an exciting time moving to a new country and you will feel "home-sick" to begin with. Join Clubs, go to gym if that is your thing, anything to meet people and make new friends. Remember that wherever you are, "home" is where you currently live, not where you came from , do not compare how they do things there to how things are done where you grew up and you will find it easier to settle. My son and his wife recently emigrated and are now living near Sydney and they love it - hope you do when you finally get there.

I have been to Australia and it is a fascinating country with such diverse surroundings and climate. You have it all,,rugged outback, rain forest and the most gorgeous beaches and scenery ever.
I loved the more relaxed pace of life. I like what Australia has to offer and I hope to emigrate there withing the next few years. Both hubby and I are nurses and hope to give something back to Australia.
The housing is fantastic and spacious generally too and so were the Aussies we met.

First my congratulation for your choice. Its a really good one. I immigrated 2 years back to melbourne. Australia is great. You may find 2-3 months to get a decent job in your field. You have to prepare for that. Melbourne is very good in lot of aspect. weather, people, jobs, density of people, traffic conditions, food, club, sports, public transport etc.
Over all your decision is good. Welcome Abroad. :-)
shanks
