In the NFL, Home team chooses their color and the visiting team goes opposite (i.e., if the Bengals choose those awful orange jerseys the Ravens still could not wear their black jerseys) with one team always wearing white.
In college same general rule for football.
Basketball expressly states home team wears white in high school just as HS football states visitors wear white. The NBA has that understanding from tradition but I actually believe there are some exceptions that must pass muster with the league.

There are exceptions in football. In the NFL, Dallas, Miami, Cleveland, and San Diego would wear white jerseys at home. Then in the late '70s some teams like the Cardinals, Redskins and Eagles started wearing white at home so the Cowboys would wear those blue jerseys that they had little success in.
In college, I seem to remember LSU and Miami wearing white at home. Must have been the heat.

I think the previous answers have pretty much covered this, except for two things:
1) For years, the Lakers have usually worn purple uniforms on the road and gold at home. Why? I don't know. Only in the last few years have they started wearing white uniforms anywhere.
2) I think the reason the Cowboys preferred white jerseys, at least under Tom Landry, is that it fit in with their "good guy" image -- in contrast the Oakland Raiders, who wore black to cultivate their image as outlaws. This may also have been a secondary reason for the Dolphins preferring white, at least during the Shula era.

Good question. Football is like the only sport that doesnt wear white at home on a regular basis. Unless you're the Cowboys, Dolphins, or Redskins. I wish I knew.

Usually in football, the home team will wear its' team colors. It's also to let the fans know which team is which. In basketball, it's almost the same. It lets you know which team is which. But since they are both different sports, they just have different rules usually.

You are almost correct. NBA has teams wear white at home I believe. In the NHL the away team wears white. It is just how they have their rules.
In the NFL the home team can choose what jersey to wear. For example the Chicago Bears wear their black jerseys at home, while the Washington Redskins wear their white jerseys at home.

actually, the home team can wear whatever color it chooses. the Cowboys wear white at home, for example. if, for example ....... a team that normally wears their colored uniforms at home chooses they want to wear their white uniforms, they can but must advise the league office that they plan to do so. some teams have done this in the past to force the Cowboys to wear their colored uniforms on the road.

not always. the DALLAS COWBOYS, wear white at home. Tom Landry started this because He felt it gave His team an advantage. white uniforms stay cooler in the TEXAS heat than, the dark blue that is supposed to be their home uniforms.

Because basketball sucks and pales in comparrison to football. But really I think it has somthing to do with the surrounding color. Or maybe that's just how they set it up.
