Okay, the 1 spot is a point gaurd, the leader of the offense that sets plays and looks for his teamates to score (example) Steve Nash. The 2 is a shooting gaurd, can handle the ball as well as the point gaurd but looks to score more than get assists (example) Kobe Bryant. The 3 is a Small forward the all around player of the team, he can handle the ball and still post up like the best of them (example) LeBron James, or Carmelo Anthony. The 4 is a power forward a post player used for rebounds (Tyson Chandler) used for scoring (Dirk Nowitzki, Rasheed Wallace, Jermaine O'neal and Kevin Garnett) used to distribute (Chris Webber) used for defense (Jermaine O'neal, Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace). The 5 is the center main point is to defend the paint, rebound, and if they are an iminate threat, used to post up abuse and score on the opposing center, and many power forwards can play this position too. Examples of defense (Ben Wallace, Shaq, Marcus Camby, and Andre Kirelinko) Examples of Offense ( Shaq and Yao Ming) Exaples of rebounding (Shaq, Yao, and Eric Dampier) I hope that gave you a clear description of what the 1 2 3 4 and 5 are and what the position is used for

1 is PG
2 is SG
3 is SF

But they mostly use numbers when referring to guards, e.g. "2 guard" because point guard and shooting guard are outdated, Kobe revolutionized the guard positions
