I moved last month and was shocked to find that my electric bill tripled from the last residence. Now, I'm on a mission to find out how much energy is consumed by my different appliances--I know, it must sound a little crazy.

So...I'm trying to determine how much energy my fridge uses in kWh--not dollars because energy cost varies across different areas of the country. From the inside label, I've found out its a Whirlpool and a 2005 model--fairly new. It's set to the recommended setting.

Any one out there know how much energy it uses? Thanks!

Your fridge - look it up on Whirlpools website. No need to guess.

What you REALLY need is a watt meter such as this one...

I've been on this mission myself before. Here was what I found: Electric hot water was my number one participant. It obviously got worse when my kids became teenagers and graduated from complaining about bathtime to languishing in the shower or tub! Another odd find was my outdoor A/C unit! It seems they often have heaters in them to prevent the lubricating oil from being in the piston chamber (too much anyway). Something was wrong with mine and it was drawing 5 amps at 240V all winter! That's 1.2KWH. Before I replaced it, I began shutting off the 240V breaker for that portion in the fall.

Anyway, the watt meter I suggested is better than an amp meter. Especially for things like refrigerators who have a variety of energy consumption modes depending whether they are cooling, defrosting or runnng the little heater band around the seals to prevent mold.
