I am describing a plan to my house and I don't know if this is the correct word. I am describing the portion from the outside door to the inside door where you can hang coats. I don't know if I make myself clear, but I will thank you for your suggestions.

The foyer is the entryway into your house, hotel etc. Some houses have a small area others a large area. We live in a condo and when you come in there is a closet and the laundry room. Some have a closet and 2 piece bathroom. It all depends on what people want. In a hotel, there are seating areas and the desk.
I hope I answered it well enough for you. : } Your answer was correct--you knew more than you thought!! : }

The foyer generally refers to the landing or entry area just inside the front door. It is a place for people to stand while the door is closed behind them. Some are adjacent to a coat closet. Some are larger than others. More of a transition area than a room.

Most of the other answers are correct, I wouldn't consider a 5' X 5' space between doors a foyer, that's just a windbreak.

Yes, that is the correct term. A foyer is the entrance room or hall in some houses instead of entering directly into the living room.

I think it is somewhat regional.

We call this a breezeway or entrance hall.

Typically "foyer" is used only for public spaces in hotels and buildings or in very large homes. A foyer is inside your front door, where you first greet guests.

I think the area between the outer and inner doors would be more of a mudroom or entryway. a foyer is more of a "lobby" type area
