If you like RPGs, it's a really great one. If you might not like it, rent it first, but I thought it was wonderful (I played the 360 version). There's a lot to it, and you won't be able to get all the way through it on a rental.

The 360 and ps3 are a huge dissapointment. Their hardware is sub-par to even basic modern computing technology, and equivilant to that of what you might find in a cheap Dell or HP computer.
With that said, Oblivion was originally made for the 360 and ported to the PC. This caused the PC version to be graphically lackluster in terms of it's true potential; especially given the performance and quality of GPU chipsets like the Nvidia 8800 series. Fortunatley the third party mod community, has released graphics texture packs, to present Oblivion how it SHOULD look.
If you have a computer, that's 'beefy' and modern, then I always recommend the PC version to people.
If you do not, then yes the PS3 version is updated and is not a port from the 360. It will also come with the Shivering Isles expansion built in(or I believe it will..)
On a related note; I would scrap the ps3, you can still make a bundle off them on EBAY, then take that money and get a real gaming machine (PC).
Either way, Oblivion is a lovely game and quite in depth for those people who don't play online RPGs. It's however hard to say whether to buy or rent. It will be full price for a while, and it's one of those games that you can't just blow through if you want to actually enjoy it. Five day rentals (or whatever) is definatley not enough time to experience it properly.

Read a review of the game @ http://ps3bible.com/Playstation-14210751-B000GKCI4A-Elder_Scrolls_IV_Oblivion.html#reviews
It does seem worthy to buy, esp as the PS3 has bonuc content not available in the Xbox360 version.
The gameplay is unquestioned and just take a look at the graphics - it looks really good.
