Hi and welcome to the hobby!

It's great that you are asking questions before you get your fish! That's very responsible and I'm sure that alone will make your dad proud. I have kept guppies and bred them for years. Keeping guppies is really pretty easy. If you understand a few basics, you will do just fine. Guppies need a little bit of space so get the largest tank you can. Be sure your tank has a heater and a filter. You can decorate your tank how ever you want, but I suggest including plenty of plastic plants for the guppies to hide in and be comfortable.

Start your tank with only one or two guppies. A new tank can't support many fish at all. Within a few weeks it will support more, but if you put in many at first they all will die. I am adding two links at the bottom that will explain why, please print this and go over it with your dad BEFORE you get your fish! It will help a lot. You both need to understand what is happening in the tank before you get your fish. The stuff on these pages is for any fish tank, including your guppies. Learn this stuff and get your new fish all comfortable before you worry about breeding them. Feel free to email me at magicman116@yahoo.com if I can help.

Hi! When I was about your age I had a whole tank with TONS of guppies and loved doing it! TIll this day I still love keeping and breeding guppies. I would get a male guppy and two female guppies ( you could ask the fish person at the shop if there are any that could already be pregnant) Than I would put them In a tank with LOTS of plants! Because guppys will eat there babies if there are no plants. The female guppies will start to get a black spot near there bottom area and that black spot is the babies eyes! I was always excited seeing that! You will also see them get bigger! Eventually one day you'll go to the tank and see that one of your female guppies are skinny, than you will see tons of tiny cute little cutie patunies ( sorry I love seeing baby guppies!) Good luck with your guppies they are sooo much fun! bye hun! *guppylover*
