this coul;d be for any number of reasons. as others have siad the paperclip straightened out is one way to get your cd tray to eject though it should be noted that this method will only just unlock the drive and it will only pop open a fem millimeters and you will need to pulll the drive harmlessly fully open to remove any disk that may be in the drive.

now turn off the computer at the mains. unplug it.
now open op the chassis and take a look at the power cable on your CD as it may have worked loose. also check the data cable is firmly and correctly connected. (just push both cables firmly into the back of the drive) now leave the computer tower chassis/ case open, plug it in and turn your computer back on.
now while the computer is booting attempt to open and close the drive with the botton on the drive. if this still fails to open then you can safely power off before the computer starts booting the operating system. if you leave your computer to boot to the sign in screen just use the turn off computer command, assuming that the CD failed to load and eject.
you may have a bug in your powersupply which may mean the connector to the CD is not providing sufficient power anymore (it happens from time to time), nothing to worry about as you can normally just switch around the connectors to get a connection that works.
you should also attempt to try and swap the connector from the hard drive to the CD then reboot if the system fails to boot from your hard drive then you have a fault in your power supply. This is not a big problem to solve. you can get a new power supply relatively cheaply depending on what W PSU you want (dabs.com in the UK do a 650W PSU under £45 delivered obviousley cheaper and lower W supplies exist).
if it is not the PSU then your CD may have failed, again not to worry you can get a CD_rom for under £15, CD-R/RW drives and DVD drives from under £35 delivered again see dabs.com (optical drives).
take a look when booting up your system before any of the above as your CD drive may have a bug which means the bios is unable to read the drives correct ID which can cause the symptom of the drive not being able to eject as the bios has not recognised it. you can also attempt to remove the data cable leaving the four wire power cable connected, and then attempt to use the normal load/eject button. if this works and the drive ejects then you have either the data cable or a firmware problem. you can attempt to resolve this by resetting the bios to the factory defaults but if you manually adjust the bios you can cause performance errors on your system (meaning a once fast system will run at about half speed or worse) which could take several attempts to find the correct settings for optimal perfomance.

face it drives fail. and this may have happened in your case, especially with heavy or near constant use. but replacing a CD is one of the easiest things you can do.

you open up the chasis
disconnect the cables from the old drive
unscrew (or otherwise enable the removal) the old drive
remove the drive from the chasis.
insert the new drive
screw in place, connect the cables.
job done.
a windows xp based system should recognise the new drive automatically. you may be prompted for a driver disk but this would be rare.

good luck.

remember there are as i said many reason why a cd would fail to eject. one of which could be a damaged or broken disc in the drive. if the paper clip fails to solve your problem. use the steps above to remove the drive and then proceed by unscrewing the drive to take it apart to remove the disc.
this step should only be done wher the emergency eject has failed to release any disc that may be in the drive.
remember also that when using the paper clip you need to press firmly untill you feel the resistance and until the drive pops open!

good luck!

I have seen this a few times on older cd drives. sometimes the cd doesn't seet properly in the drive and actually wedges the drawer shut. Another cause is a small switch that detects when the drawer is closed myay be bad. And the cam motor that operates the drawer may begetting power . If you don't have a manual release hole on the drive for a paper clip, you can remove the drive, take the metal cover off and unjam the cd if that is the case. if it still won't open then locate the cam motor ( it has a worm gear on it), and try to operate it by applying volatage from a flashligt battery with some wires. If the motor works you need to replace the drive.

if all else fails, there is a little hole under the cd player, stick a paper clip or pin or something small like that into the hole as far as you can, the cd drive will be forced to open... it's ok, it doesn't damage anything. Actually i've come across this problem myself.. it is quite annoying, if this doesn't stop happening you should maybe get a new cd drive or get someone to cheack out your computer..

If the cd drive has a flap cover on it try pulling flap down and push the cd in slightly with fingers and then try the button again.

Find a little hole and push a paper clip through it. Seriously! The drive will open.

there should be a small hole at the bottom below the disk tray that you can use a straightened paper clip to push in and manually open the drive
