I love my mom's DVR, but I don't want to get cable just to have one- likewise, I don't want to pay $15/month and $300 for a box from Tivo. I know they have stand alone units, but I don't know anything about them. How do they work? Are they just as good as the others? They are lots of money and I needed advice before purchasing- Thank you in advance for your help with this.

Get yourself an older ReplayTV dvr. There are no monthly fees associated with the older boxes. Or, you could turn an old computer into a very good dvr with MythTV (google it).

Try talking to your cable company. They usually have a very cheap plan that they don't advertise. It's all your basic channels plus a few extra. I have cox cable and you only pay a fee each month, you never have to pay for the DVR itself, which is so nice cause if you have any type of problem with it you just take it back and they give you a new one, free of charge.

ur best bet is to get order dish network. it's cheaper than cable and all u pay is a monthly fee of $5.00 to $6.00 and the dvr is free but u dont get keep it once ur done with dish networks commitment if u decide to cancle ur service u have to return it. the good thing is u dont have to purchase it. even if u go ahead and buy a stand alone one u still gonna have to pay $100 or more. sometimes they have rebate when it's free. the advantage of dish network is they have a single tuner which is for one tv or a dual tuner for 2 tvs and u watch on them independently. if u have a hi-def tv u can also get one those too. good luck on ur decision!!
