i have had this battery laying around for a couple years, i don't know how to get rid of it. do i recycle it or just toss it?

you go to Fenway Park when the Yankees are playing the Red Sox and throw it at the outfielders. At least thats what they do in Boston.

I assume you mean a small battery, such as those used in smoke detectors. If your community has a recycling program, I would certainly take advantage of it. If not, throw it in the trash.
If it is some kind of large, lead-acid battery, you MUST recycle it.
