They didn't know anything about atoms. The most common idea was that everything was made from four elements, earth, wind, fire and water. This is based on ancient Greek thinking.

Atomism can be traced back to 440 BCE in ancient Greece (Democritus and Leucippus). However, during the middle ages, it was rejected in favor of Aristotle's theory of 5 elements (earth, air, fire, water, and ether). This alternate theory led to Alchemy, which prevailed through much of the middle ages.

People belived that all matter is made up of 4 elements arranged in different proportions.These were-air water fire earth .

They did not have much knowledge about science......According to them, every thing was made of soil,fire, water and air

They even thought that MAN IS MADE OF SOIL......their brain was not much developed to think over these thoughts..
