Yes, introverts have the potential to be great leaders.

Introverts are contemplative and very much able to focus on what they have to do. They are usually very sure of themselves and what they believe in, and will not yield easily to external pressure. They treasure qualitative relationships with people (over quantitative relationships), and are likely to be very understanding of the people they work with. They are reliable people who think over their words before they speak and their actions before they act.

One of the difficult things about being an introverted leader, however, would be that leadership involves people. Sometimes, lots of people. Because most introverts put so much of themselves into everything they do and take everything very personally, prolonged interactions with people may be very draining for them. Their profound sensitivity may also allow remarks that others (especially extroverts) may not really mean to have substantial impact on their self-confidence. Again, this is extremely draining.

Yes, of course. Introvert usually lead by the thoughts inside himself and that in others in the group. Great leaders are introverts and the extroverts as leaders are short lived.

Yes if the group needs a leader who contemplate (problemoriented) and is strategic more than operative.

A such leader being a corpral in acute war is useless,
but a general maybe need the introvert skills in same situation,
if introvert means something like: why am i looking at that problem that way and not this way..."

Yes, I believe that introverts can be very effective leaders, but maybe they will deal with politics of leadership differently than extroverts. This may affect their appearance as leaders, positively or negatively, in the eyes of their followers.
