hi i was at my midwife check up today , i'm 36+ weeks pregnant, nearly 37 and she adv that i was measuring a bit small , only a few centimeters so she wasnt greatly concerned but still has arranged for me to have a growth ultrasound tomorrow.
i'm not too worried as she said it wasn't too far out, but i was wondering what sort of thing this could indicate?
does it mean the baby is just small ?

Typically it just means that the baby is measuring smaller then other babies at that week in gestation. Sometimes it could just be that your little one is just on the smaller end, nothing to worry about.

Other times it could indicate intrauterine growth restriction/retardation (IUGR) and that could be harmful to the baby meaning that they aren't getting the oxygen and nutrients through the umbilical cord.

Honestly, don't worry about it there are lots of babies born out there who are just on the smaller side.

Best of luck!

At 30 weeks I measured small and was sent for an ultrasound. They saw that the baby wasn't small, I had low amniotic fluid. They checked for a leak in the sac, there was none. They checked the baby's kidneys, they were also fine (amniotic fluid is part baby's own urine). They just couldn't determine what was causing my low fluid. I was placed on bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy and I was to drink lots and lots of water. Because though you are so far along in pregnancy, if the cause of measuring small is due to low fluid, I don't think it's much of a worry. If it's very low, then they would deliver the baby. Your fluid should measure above 12. Mine fluctuated between 5 and 10.

I'm sure your baby is fine. Congrats and good luck.

It probably means you aren't really as far along as they think...other possible things are: just small, expect that if you have small people in your family. It could be something serious like the placenta is starting to fail(highly unlikely) There's no way to know for sure without running some tests like your midwife is suggesting so don't worry she's on top of things!=)
