Defense are the people who obviously defend the goal...Diff types such as zone which is players shift to wherever the ball is, man to man which is self explanitory where a defender guards a midfielder or attack men, Pressure in which whoever has the ball the defender goes after.
Also you don't need to know about soccer....instead of asking us get the courage to ask him to teach you

Just so you know, there are 11 players on each team playing at a time unless somebody gets kicked out by a red card (for playing rough or something like that). Anyways, these 11 players take up 4 positions (Striker, Middlefield, Defence and goalkeeper). There are 4 defence for each team playing at once. Their job is to help get the soccer ball back up to the middlefield and strikers to score some goals. But mainly they are to defend from their opponents trying to score goals on your net, which the goalkeeper is blocking. The four defensive positions are sweeper, stopper, right back and left back. You should ask him which one he plays.

Defence have to work as a line, if once side moves up, the other should move back. The far left and right sides can move up the field with the ball to create an attack, the central two (if there are four defenders) should stay back to support the goalkeeper.
Famous defenders (in UK) are Ashley Cole, John Terry, Wayne Bridge, Rio Ferdinand and William Gallas, hope it helps

Really simple: one team tries to put the ball in the other goal. The team with more "goals" wins. No hands are allowed in soccer (except on throw-ins and by the goalkeeper).

well football (soccer) is really easy,if your friend is a defender,he's job is to not let the opposite player score on his team,a good question to ask him will be where in the field he plays, does he plays left back or right back or perhaps stopper or sweeper, since defense is divided in to those 4 positions,if you need any more help just post your questions or e-mail me I happen to play defense my self.
