Minerals in the rock may dissolve, or the water may cause chemical decomposition of the minerals. If the water undergoes periods of freeze/thaw, then mechanical forces caused by the expansion of the ice as it freezes may cause the rock to split. Running water can erode, transport, and finally deposit rock particles in a different part of the world.
