From Italy which town ?
Anyhow it will be very bad idea to travel by bus or train from Italy to Greece since you have to travel all the way around and to cross all the Former Yugoslavia countries, and then from north Greece to Athens. It can be very long trip. Almost 2 days.
A wise idea will be to get a ferry from Ancona or Bari or Brindesi step out at Igoymenitsa (will take 8 to 10 hours) or Patras (15 to 16 hours. Travel time is depending of the port that will choose) and then by bus or train to Athens.

Advise to go as a human being (means without any trouble)by plane..
I go 3 times per year to Italy..You can go with Aegean, olympic, or also alitalia or air one.
It depends on the city...
I advise you Alitalia, and if you need more information I can help you
