Is there an historical record of the shade of Harriet Tubman's skin?

Does it matter?

When my brother was in 2nd grade he has to dress up and be George Washington Carver. My brother is blonde hair/ blued eyed and very Caucasian. We used Magic Marker on his face (my apologies to those that feel this is racist)
I think if you have to act as someone there is nothing wrong in changing the color of your face. (That being said I hope this is for a school project! lol). I think if you choose to do this, you should be respectful of the incredibly strong and brave woman you are portraying. Try to show this is about Harriet Tubman and a tribute to her, not you.
Good luck! btw if you choose to color your face with magic marker.. palmolive works well to take the marker off.

Sanbox is right on this one. There was a long tradition in popular culture of white performers using shoe polish or makeup to make their skin black. It was racist then, and even if you did it with good intentions, could be seen as racist today.

I would try and make the costume as authentic to the 1850s as you could and worry less about skin color.

But some dark-toned make-up, several shades darker than your own skin. Don't overdo it, or you will look like an old-time minstrel show performer, and that would be offensive. Wrap your hair in a turban if it isn't dark and curly.

whatever costume you use, absolutely do not use black face. there is nothing more offensive to black people than seeing a white person with black makeup on. so just wear the clothes and bring some props that illustrate who you are.
