My house cat, which is very nice and pleasant, attacked me out of the blue the other day. Actually bit through my skin. Ouch. Oh well they're "animals", they act on instinct.
Maybe your friend's hair "looks like" something to the birds, so they go down to check it out. Maybe they think it's food, or a predator?

I had the same problem happening to me when I lived at my parents house. I could only conclude, nests aside, that I was simply in the birds 'territory' (if you looked, you could see different types of birds fighting from time to time), and they wanted me out. I suppose we have to remember that animals don't think like people do, and don't know we are simply trying to live with them. =)

Animals usually do not attack for no reason, but have a purpose for doing so. It may be that they are feeling threatened by your friend's presence. I may be that they have learned from past experience that your friend is a threat. Ask you friend if they are doing anything that might be construed as a threat.

Animals & birds protect their territory. They apparently feel as though your friend, is a threat to their home.

if they are crows, there might be a new baby crow up in the tree that they are trying to protect. those types of birds are really protective (and darn smart). however, why they would do that to one person and not another is beyond me.

I think it is because they feel threatened for what ever reason. Animals are mostly reactionary
