Space: provides communications: television, internet and mobile phone service throughout the world. Satellites are crucial for weather forecasting.

You may or may not be familiar with Barringer Crater in Arizona. It's where an meteorite hit. We need to go back into space and catalog every object that could hit us. Deep Impact is a movie, but the basic idea of a large space object hitting the earth is true, although the probability is very low in any given year. Given that an impact is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, the costs of being ill-prepared are quite high.

Over the past century the population has increased while available space for food growth has fallen. In short if we don't use the technologies developed to travel space to create agricultural colonies on the moon; with 100 years over a billion human beings will starve to death.

The sun is slowly using up it's energy; eventually it will cease to exist; if humanity is to survive over the next few billion years we have to leave Earth.

Technology from space has enabled satellites and mass communication; the world is linked far more closely together then ever before. That closeness will only grow in time and will eventually lead to humanity overcoming it's myriad of issues and creating a global peace.

We need to monitor space in order to detect incoming meteors and comets that could cause extinction level events here on Earth.

Finally it's human nature to explore and strive to better oneself and we have a whole Universe out there that needs to be explored.

I think that scientists want to know if any life exists other than Earth. And if life is found, I think that we could eventually colonize that place.
